Capulets and Montagues

The US has been ruled by 2 families for 20 years (28 if you count Bush Sr.’s VP terms).  Do we really want another 4-8 more?  Here’s hoping a secret lesbian affair between Chelsea and Jenna will bring the country back together.

race prep

January 23, 2008 at 3:43 pm (Uncategorized)

So, on Saturday, B and  I are running the 5k at the Zoo.  What have I done to get ready?  Well, not a whole heck of a lot.  It’s been really cold outside, there has been sickness in the family, and it’s taking all I’ve got to do my moderate (15-20mins) weight training several times per week.  At least I can squeeze that in while the kids are playing or napping or something.

It seemed like this would be the world’s most perfect race — perfectly after the holidays to motivate us to get moving  after a few days more sluggish than should be.  But I have honestly found myself NOT CARING at all whether or not I get out and run.  And when  I do, I don’t feel well.  So, Saturday will be a struggle of me vs. me as well as me vs. race.

In the knitting news, I have been moving slowly.  I haven’t been feeling super great, so I haven’t cranked out a bunch of stuff.  That hadn’t bugged me until about last night.  I am now on a mission to finish the first real post-Christmas knitting project.  I guess since I knit so much for Christmas that I can’t really imagine just sitting around and knitting for fun during January.  But the hurry-up spring arm warmers will be accomplished before the week is out.  And if we’re really lucky, in time for tomorrow’s frigid blast.

I think I’m in a funk lately.  Maybe it’s the post-holiday, budget-resetting, other life-changing-things mindset.  There’s just been a little too much tv and not enough activity in the house.  I know that’s changed easily, but the motivation to get out there isn’t.  Once it starts to warm up today, I’m dragging the kids to the library so I can vote and so they can get out from in front of the tube.  I mean, it was the  same kind of way when I was a kid.  I remember endless tv hours.  I also remember my mom breaking the monotony at some point and making us do something different.  Now that I’m the mom, I have to be “responsible” and drag ’em away today.

what have i done?

January 8, 2008 at 6:51 pm (Uncategorized)

Our son has a big sister, so he is going to definitely want to do some girly things to be like her. Today, in her absence, he has located several barrettes and with each one would so sweetly ask “Help!” I thought at first that it just meant to open each barrette so he could play with them, which is fine, but then… He started putting them in his hair. And smiling about it. I don’t have the heart to take them out because he likes them so much. Hopefully he won’t be scarred for life.

Now for a couple of CO pics.

This is the view from the place we were staying. It was at the base of one of the best peaks, with lots of lifts and everything. The fresh snow made everything just right.

Of course, then when we tried to get back to Denver on Sunday afternoon, there was some problem. Roads were pretty treacherous with ice and lots of packed snow. We passed a few pretty unfortunate accidents. Even the tunnels were icy on the inside. And you might find signs like this.

But we made it home. And, let me say how nice it is to be home. So nice. I missed the boys pretty badly, and it’s good to be back with them.

when it doesn’t snow at home,

January 4, 2008 at 11:58 pm (Uncategorized)

go somewhere where it does snow.  I brought the girl to Colorado for an adventure.  Today she went to ski school and learned about a broken elevator, how to color, ate Froot Loops, and actually learned to ski just a little bit.  She can at least start and stop.  It was all going well until some of the kids with less integrity began to cry that they didn’t want to return for the last portion of the lesson.  So, she decided to chime in.  I had to pick her up about 1.5 hours early while she cried about being sleepy.  She says she wants to ski again tomorrow, so we’ll hit it then.  I truly think the most disappointing moment I have had with her where I just wanted to cry for her and fix it all for her was when she disclosed that a girl named Olivia wouldn’t stop to play with her because  she was “too busy doing what she was already doing” to talk to her.  This particularly crushed the girl because she has a friend of said name at preschool, so I guess she just assumes anyone with that name would be her friend.

But the girl can ski, I say!  I want some pictures — I didn’t get a great shot today and wasn’t able to get the good afternoon opportunities for photo due to picking her up early.  While we are here,  we are to get about 3-5 inches more of snow.  It’s been snowing steadily all day long, and it is GORGEOUS.

So far I’ve had a restful trip.  I plan on hitting some shops tomorrow and getting some knitting done as well.  It was a  pretty grueling journey to here thanks to the Denver airport’s less-than-efficient luggage claim department, but we are here now, and enjoying ourselves.

A  much needed blogging hiatus was taken, but soon enough there will be abundant photos of some  delectables from Christmas and the party and all.

Santa was pretty good to us.  The kids got massive amounts of toys including dress-up clothes, train tables, books, you name it.  I was fortunate enough to get GH3, a waffle iron (!), etc.   It was really nice.  I do wish that illness had evaded  us during the holidays, but that’s just the way it goes with kids and winter time.
